Social Responsibility

Fikelela means 'reach out' in Xhosa and that’s exactly what the organization does. They reach out for ‘Kids in Need’ and try to change their lives in a positive manner.

Fikelela has been running for 11 years in Khayelitsha, a Township on the outskirts of Cape Town. It provides short term care for up to 40 children between the ages of 0 to 8 years. The home offers a secure and nurturing environment for children who have been abandoned, orphaned, neglected, abused and homeless children. Fikelela does not stop there; Children with TB, HIV and chronic illnesses are nursed back to health to ensure a better quality of life.

Children are our future and we need to nurture them. Fikilela provides various activities which incorporate the childrens’ occupational therapy sessions in a fun way. The faces of the children bear witness that they are happy despite their challenging circumstance.

Our struggle in South Africa is to bridge the gap between rich and poor. Lack of education is an ongoing challenge and we can be thankful to the organizations who are trying to remedy this issue. It is important for parents to inter-act with their children in the education process, however many parents themselves suffer from lack of education and struggle to feed their families.

Fikelela believes in the re-unification of families. It currently has a 90% success rate in reunifying the children with their parents, grandparents or extended families. Foster care is the last resort.  They support the parents in partnership with social workers to ensure families are rehabilitated to take back their children, and care for them in a safe, responsible environment.

ATC actively gets involved by setting aside time to visit the home to play with the children. We recently sponsored groceries, a commercial washing machine, a commercial tumble dryer, micro fibre blankets and econo heat panel heaters.

We are looking forward to continue our work together with the passionate organization Fikelela and to all the fun we have with the adorable kids.
