Durban to host 2022 Commonwealth Games

Durban has been named host city of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, making it the first African city to do so.

Government expects that about R20 billion, which translates to R11 billion in Gross Domestic Product growth, will be delivered to the economy by the games. Minister of Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, said: “The South African government took a deliberate decision to position the country as a tourist destination for the 2010 World Cup, and these games will once again affirm this.”

South Africa is at a great advantage because it won’t build but renovate and use existing infrastructure made possible by the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
