Indoor activities when it rains in Cape Town

Posted on Monday, 22nd Jun 2015

Is the Cape weather raining on your parade? Here are some interesting indoor activities that can keep you (and the family) busy and dry when the sky is gloomy and pelting rain. You may be stuck inside, but you won’t be bored!

  • The Springbok Experience Rugby Museum

This state-of-the-art museum is a vibrant showcase of South Africa’s lifeblood, rugby! Audio-visual exhibits and interactive displays provide an immersive experience which tells the story of SA’s favourite sport. The Springbok Trials zone is open for you to test your mettle with kicking, passing, fitness and reaction challenges (great for releasing some energy when it’s wet outside!). The museum reveals the rich background of rugby in South Africa and holds interesting notable artifacts from the game. There is also merch-shop where you can purchase everything from Springbok hoodies to water bottles.

  • Butterfly World

Nestled near the small Boland town of Klapmuts you can find the unique experience that is Butterfly World Tropical Garden, one of the more eccentric attractions of the Cape Winelands. The 1000m2 greenhouse-enclosed garden is a paradise for free flying exotic butterflies. There is also an interactive walk-through section where marmoset monkeys and flamboyant tropical parrots are freely roaming. The humid climate and fluttering medley of colour might just be enough to make you forget about the rainstorm outside.

  • Cave Golf

When your favourite golf course is flooded and swampy, you can always go and brush up your putting skills at indoor Cave Golf. Located next to the V&A Waterfront’s Scratch Patch (another rainy weather winner), the Cave Golf venue has been designed to look like a comfy, cosy cave. The 18-hole putt-putt course is deceptively tricky with a combination of uncertain angles, uneven surfaces and unrelenting obstacles. Overall, a family-fun activity that will keep you out of the wet (for a while).

  • Bubbly and Nougat Pairing

The House of J.C. Le Roux in Stellenbosch is well-known for their sparkling wines as well as their amazing taste pairings. There are two eminent tasting tours that pique our interest. The first pairs Methodé Cap Classique and sparkling wine with various pieces of nougat, while the second tasting tour pairs with marshmallows and meringues. The tastings are formally presented by knowledgeable staff, just be sure to phone ahead as booking is essential.

  • Chocolate, Grappa, Biltong and Beer Tasting

The Paarl Winelands has a lot to offer in terms of its artisanal village-like complex. You get to choose from a range of excitingly tantalising taste experiences. There is an educational chocolate tasting session at the De Villiers Artisan Chocolate factory, grappa and schnapps sampling at the award-winning Wilderer Distillery, springbok and kudu biltong and droëwors from the Barley & Biltong Emporium and craft beer sampling at the Cape Brewing Company. If you have had your fill of food and drink then you can explore the glassblowing studio.

Even when it rains - there’s something to do!
