Home to well over 125 000 golfers, South Africa’s 450 golf courses are ranked amongst the top in the world. With this heritage it’s no wonder the likes of Gary Player, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen have honed their skills to carve lasting divots in the world’s top tee-boxes. You too can experience the luxury, tranquillity and scenic stimulation playing these five world-class golf courses that are uniquely South African!

Leopard Creek – Malelane

Sitting on the border of the Kruger National Park, the Leopard Creek Country Club golf course is a cocktail of golf and safari, blending natural fauna and flora with innovative architecture. Golfing hazards take on a new dimension at Leopard Creek, although the course and living areas are protected from wild animals, you are likely to see a bloat of hippos nonchalantly wallowing in the water hazards or a bask of crocodiles lazing on the banks. The course was designed by Gary Player, who is especially proud of the island green on the 18th hole. This course requires accurate drives and strategic approaches.

Located in the world-renowned Kruger National Park, home to the Big Five, this course offers both challenge and adventure. The course is not fenced-in so it provides a close-to-nature experience where it is commonplace to have uninvited spectators such as warthogs, impalas and baboons, just to mention a few! The Skukuza golf course was initially a recreational facility for Kruger National Park staff, but later became the first golf course set in a game reserve to be accessible to park visitors. No golfers have ever been harmed by wild animals, but a lion once killed a buffalo on the first green.

Legend Golf Resort – close to Mookghophong (Naboomspruit)

The Legend Golf and Safari Resort is home to the “world-in-one” Signature Course where each of the 18 holes was designed by a world golfing legend, including Trevor Immelman, Vijay Singh, Bernard Langer and Retief Goosen. The cherry on top is the “Extreme 19th”, the highest and longest Par 3 in the world. After a short helicopter ride to the top of the magnificent Hangklip Mountain you will tee-off hoping that your ball finds its way to the Africa shaped green located hundreds of metres below. Boasting wide fairways and immaculate greens, this course is a must see for the die-hard golfer.

Hans Merensky – Phalaborwa

This renowned golf course was voted as the best walking course in the country as well as receiving the Diamond Arrow award for the highest rated course in the Limpopo Province. Teeing off you will be surrounded by a tranquil bushveld atmosphere as the resident giraffes and other wildlife judge your swing. This Bob Grimsdell designed Championship Golf Course evokes a natural serenity throughout its beautifully conditioned layout.

Lost City – Sun City

One of the highlights of this mixed-terrain golf course is the water hazard on the 13th hole with two-metre long Nile crocodiles lurking in the pond. Set within the beautiful valleys of Sun City the series of lakes and wide fairways provide an experience that is both enjoyable and tasking. The impressive 100-hectare course also features a driving range and a putting green to practice your finesse. This Gary Player designed course will challenge you to use every club in your bag!
