Glamping is a portmanteau of the words ‘glamour’ and ‘camping’. This isn’t your regular camping exploit as it features basic amenities and resort-style services that are not usually associated with the traditional camping experience. This form of luxury camping has become particularly popular in recent times due to the combination of comfort, escapism and adventure. Here are some great glamping spots in South Africa:

West Coast Luxury Tent, Elandsbaai, Western Cape

Located on a private beachfront with no access for the public. The luxury tents with private en-suite bathroom sleeps two people (in a double bed). Fully equipped kitchenette with fridge, stove and catering utensils. There is also a private "braaiplek" for each tent. The tent is a mere 500 meter walk from the unspoiled beach, hidden behind a sand dune. There is also a 400 meters long private airstrip on the farm that can be used by light aircraft prior to arrangement. The area is known for abundant birdlife and spectacular ocean sunsets.

Agama Tented Camp, Garies, Northern Cape

The Agama Tented Camp accommodates 14 people and is based just 20km north of Garies. The Namaqualand area is world-renowned for its floral season which blooms between July and October. The comfortable tented accommodation all have their own private bathrooms and spacious decks from which you can admire the expansive beauty of the landscape, and a variety of small game and Gemsbok, with sundowner in hand. Home-cooked, farm style dinner and full English breakfast are included.

Mahlangeni Boutique Game Reserve, Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape

The Mahlangeni Boutique is comprised of two double bedrooms (one which can be changed to two single beds) a separate bathroom and a central living area with kitchenette leading onto a private patio with braai. The Plettenberg Bay region is brimming with activities such as Tree Top Canopy Tours, bird watching in the world's largest single span aviary, the world's highest commercial bungy jump and much more. There are also picturesque hiking trails and an opulence of wildlife to see including Bushbuck, Impala, Zebra and Porcupine.

Hamiltons Tented Safari Camp, Kruger, Mpumalanga

Hamiltons Tented Camp reflects a safari adventure where the quintessence of style is one of refined grace and uncompromising elegance. All of the tented suites have a bath and outdoor shower overlooking the Ngwenyeni Dam, as well as air-conditioning, mosquito nets, a linked intercom service and a private veranda. Timber walkways link to the open tented lounge and there is a butler service on hand to deliver your personalised cuisine. Children over the age of 8 years are welcome and are accommodated in their own rooms. The camp offers superb game viewing in an intimate and secluded setting.

Motsomi Lodge & Tent Camp, Thabazimbi, Limpopo

Situated in the bushveld, Motsomi Lodge & Tent Camp is an ideal resting point for travellers on their way to Botswana. The facilities include solar heated swimming pools, poolside braai, thatched lapas, billiard table and a lounge and bar area. Motsomi is home to a diversity of animals including leopards and cheetahs. The camps are self-catering, but breakfast can be arranged at an additional charge.

The freedom of the great outdoors coupled with established facilities is the perfect pairing of being at the edge of your comfort zone, while still being comfortable. We hope you will visit soon!
