Posted on Friday, 04th Jul 2014

Today we will walk you through the majestic and scenic vineyards of the Cape Winelands, highlighting the finest wine estates – each one offering a unique and different experience, and some possessing enchanting views, while others are draped in history and fame.

Vineyards in Franschhoek

The Cape Winelands is an area of immense beauty and one that is steeped in rich history and culture. The fertile green valleys of these winelands are surrounded by proud and majestic deep blue mountains creating the perfect backdrop. It is the Mediterranean climate and the winter rainfall of the Western Cape that produces some of the best wines in the country, if not the world. The thriving rich fertile soils along the Breede River Valley – along with Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Constantia – have become world renowned for their whites, reds, sherries, ports and brandies. The winelands incorporate many wine routes such as the Constantia Wine Route, Stellenbosch Wine Route, Paarl Wine Route and Franschhoek Wine Route, each with their own unique charm and flair.

In the year 1697, commander Simon van der Stel of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) arrived at the Cape supply station. With a vast amount of knowledge in viticulture, which he gained at his vineyards in Muiderbergh, he soon put his knowledge of wine and brandy-making to use, resulting in the start of wine making in South Africa and the birth of the oldest wine estate in the county called Groot Constantia.

Vineyards in Constania Valley

The wines of Groot Constantia became extremely famous and popular in Europe, and by the year 1709 there were 70 000 vines on the farm with Simon van der Stel producing 5,630 litres of wine a year. Today the estate is famous for its production of high-quality red wines, including Shiraz, Merlot and blended red Gouverneurs Reserve. The estate also boasts a manor house which is now a museum and two restaurants for fine dining.

Wine and Cheese delight at Fairview Wine Estate

Moving away from the Constantia Valley and up to the Paarl region of the Winelands, one particular wine estate stands out because of its unique nature to combine wine with cheese. Fairview Wine and Cheese Estate produce many quality wines and cheeses to supplement the wins. Fairview cheeses have won many awards over the years and they specialize in the production of goat’s cheese. This wine estate is strongly recommended if you are looking for the ultimate wine and cheese experience.

Enchanting Haute Cabriere

As we trek further south, we reach the charming town of Franschhoek. This is where we stumble upon Haute Cabriere Wine Estate, which is separated into two farms situated either side of the breathtaking Franschhoek Wine Valley. Along with the magnificent views that this wine estate possesses, it has an extremely unique and inspiring philosophy. “Sun, Soil, Vine, Man”, four very powerful, yet simple words form the crux of what Haute Cabriere is all about. This notion emphasizes that wine is not made, but grown and that it is not one but a combination of four cohesive elements which are able to create some of the best wine blends in South Africa.

Fantastic View at Boshendal Wine Estate

We continue our journey through the Winelands heading in a westerly direction, we find a wine estate over 300 years old, called Boschendal. The Boschendal Wine Estate is situated in the Franschoek Wine Valley between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. The estate is one of the finest properties in the world and is the ultimate symbol of heritage brought to South Africa by the French Huguenots. Boschendal is more than just a wine estate as it preserves the natural environment around it. The wines produced from these vineyards take into consideration the natural heritage of area, first and foremost, and their vision is to balance tradition with experience to produce classic wines with measured modern new world attitude that are unique to Boschendal.

If you are looking to visit South Africa merely just to taste wines, these alluring wine estates are reason enough.
